Sahaal Mohamed has been a part of the Vidul Family for 22 years and was among the first of the few head office employees to join the team. “I actually saw the ad for an office assistant in the newspaper and applied on a whim, and I was surprised I got the job” said Sahaal. One of his many tasks was to deliver cheques for the company, but at times of need he would lend a hand in different areas. However, when the Batathota Mini Hydro Power Plant was launched, Sahaal was asked to assist due to understaffing, lending a hand with deliveries, driving and everything in between. Despite the immense workload on top of his duties at head office, his recollection reflects optimism, as he notes that “it was quite hectic, but I was able to power through”.

About eight years after joining the company, Sahaal suddenly found the nature of his work shifting. He was convinced to pursue Finance, something that was facilitated by both the CFO and the CEO of Vidullanka. Today he serves the company as the Assistant Manager of Procurement and is grateful for the opportunities to learn and grow. Even though he had not intended to stay at Vidullanka for long, he realized that the company was special, and has since spent more than two decades of dedicated service to the company.

The first ever project he handled in his new position was the purchasing for the Lower Kothmale Mini Hydro Power Plant, something almost surreal given the transition from his previous role. Overseeing purchasing for one of the company’s largest mini hydro power plants was to Sahaal, “a feeling I had never felt before. It was amazing to say the least.”

While his gratitude to CEO Riyaz Sangani is one of the many reasons that Sahaal has stayed on at Vidullanka, he also praises the work culture at the company. The support he gets at work extends to his personal life. “Everyone is tightly knit together, and we help each other out. The teamwork goes above and beyond,” he remarks.

Sahaal’s fondest memory at Vidullanka is exemplary of his growth since joining the company. During his early years, the CEO once asked Sahaal to close the office at the end of the day, a task which involved switching off the computers. Admitting that at the time he had little knowledge of computers, Sahaal had simply turned off the main hub switch, causing confusion when employees returned to work the next day. While the issue was resolved quickly, Sahaal shared that he has never felt as nervous as he was during those few minutes, yet he looks back at that moment with fondness. “I still constantly think back to that time when I hardly had any technical knowledge and I get to reflect at how far I have come in life, all thanks to Vidullanka”.
