The main objective of the competition is to reward the people who contribute to maintain cleaner and greener environment through environmental pollution control, waste and resources management, cleaner production and green productivity to ensure the sustainable development of the country. Awards were presented under three categories to 46 sectors in Chemical, Pharmaceutical & Petrochemical, Waste Recycling, Textile and Textile Processing, Hotels, Livestock Farming, Hospitals, apparels, Vehicle Servicing Centers, Food & Beverages, Rubber and Rubber Based Products, Mini Hydro Power Projects, Construction Projects, Local Authorities (Waste management), Private Enterprises, Public Institutes and Schools sectors. To evaluate the applications, an audit team gone through the detail report as well as field visit.
The National Green Awards 2012 organized by the Central Environmental Authority was held at the Bandaranayake Memorial International Conference Centre on 03rd December 2012 for the second consecutive year with the presence of President, Mahinda Rajapaksha; Hon. Minister of Environment, Mr. Anura Priyadarshana Yapa; Hon. Deputy Minister of Environment Mr. Al-Hajj Abdul Cader and Hon. Minister of Mahaweli and Irrigations Mr. Nimal Siripala De Silva and many Government officials.
